Linux developers are a unique bunch. Unlike many software developers, a large majority of Linux developers build programs because they love doing it, not because they're getting rich doing it. Because of this fact, you'll often see programs under development that are no longer being updated or you might see a wide variety of versions of the same package.

As a general rule, version numbers give you an idea of how mature a software package is. Unfortunately, there's no established rule for versioning software under Linux. So what may seem mature at first glance (e.g., version 2.0) may not be as mature as others (e.g., version 0.4.1). When deciding to download and install new software for Linux, do your homework and find out a little about the project before you go to a lot of trouble. It'll save you time and headaches later.
