Website and Keywords
Before we get started, lets define just what a keyword is. Gaining an understanding of this is vital to the success of your Website, IF YOU INTEND TO PROMOTE YOUR SITE BY USING THE SEARCH ENGINES. Just where to use keywords is just as vital, and will be detailed later.
PRIMARY KEYWORDS:A single word or a phrase. An extremely condensed summary describing your Website, or Webpage topic. ALSO Words and phrases entered into search engine by viewers to find Websites containing products and services they seek.
To avoid confusion, we must differentiate the use of Keywords in your site and pages, from the ‘keyword meta tag’. See Keyword Meta Tag for details. You should use Keywords throughout your Web pages and Website, but each page has a keyword meta tag of its own.
Now you know. So for keywords to be of any value, they:
- 1- Summarize what your Website and Web page are about
- 2- Are what search engine viewers are using to find websites like yours
So make sure that your keywords define your site, but are ALSO what viewers enter into search engines to find your Website.
Let’s beat this horse one more time:
Keywords:
Summarize what your site is about
Are what search engine viewers are using to find websites like yours
Other keywords further define your Website. We will call then 'Secondary Keywords' for clarity. Secondary keywords would be used on a page that say defines one of your products or services.
For Example
Let’s say you run a flower shop. The Primary Keyword for your entire site is ‘flowers’. However you also provide flowers for weddings and wedding receptions. So you would want to dedicate a page to weddings. Every page on your Website would use the Primary Keyword, ‘flowers’, but in addition, on the page that is dedicated to the wedding services you offer, you would use a Secondary Keyword, ‘weddings’.
Where to use Keywords
For keywords to be used effectively, they must be placed in prominent places. Prominent places are just what they sound like. Generally you place your keywords like a billboard, up where it can’t be missed, and in few places where search engines can miss them either.
In your pages, this means that they get placed in:
- bold
- italics
- underscored
- in heading tags
- in text links
- scattered throughout Webpae paragraphs
- in the image [alt] tag
Between the [head] and [/head] tags you want them in:
- title tags
- descrition meta tags
- keywords meta tags
Selection and placement of Keywords in your Webpage is most important if your page is to have any chance of top search engine placement. This is where you want to spend your time.
DO NOT OVERUSE KEYWORDS
Follow the instruction on each of the following pages. But generally speaking just use your keywords once in each of the tags.
Keywords and Synonyms
Remember the word ‘thesaurus’? Good for you! Mine has not been cracked since college, it’s the one I got in high school. :) Well suddenly it becomes important. Synonyms offer a way of bolstering your keywords without overusing the keyword itself. Just be careful not to over use the synonym to the point of making it a keyword.
